Optimize Display Settings in Windows XP for better performance

Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all
the visual items can waste
system resources. To
optimize: 1. Go to Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Click System
5. Click Advanced tab
6. In the Performance tab click Settings
7. Leave only the following
ticked: - Show shadows under
menus
- Show shadows under
mouse pointer
- Show translucent
selection rectangle - Use drop shadows for
icons labels on the desktop
- Use visual styles on
windows and buttons

Disable CD/DVD or USB drive Autorun

Well, this is one of my most suggested and
favorite computer trick.
What this small trick does
is, it simply makes you to
disable Autorun of any
removable drives such as cd, dvd, Pen drives etc.
You might
have noticed often that,
when ever you plugin your
USB into the Usb port or
when you insert a cd or dvd into the cd/Dvd rom
drive, Auto play option
automatically gets
executed.
It is very dangerous to
allow any drive autoplay on its own, specially Usb
drives. Because, along with
Autorun files, USB drives
containing virus also gets
executed resulting your
computer affected by virus or Trojan horses. So this trick goes this way.
Disable CD Autorun 1) Click Start, Run and enter GPEDIT.MSC 2) Go to Computer Configuration, then->
Administrative Templates,
---> System. 3) Locate the entry for Turn autoplay off. Double
click on it 4) Click on Enable. 5) Select All Drives to disable all drives including
Usb drives or only Cd Rom
drive. 6) Now click on apply.

Disable Indexing Services to free up RAM

Indexing Services is a small little program
that uses large amounts of RAM and can often make a
computer endlessly loud
and noisy. This system
process indexes and
updates lists of all the files
that are on your computer. It does this so that when
you do a search for
something on your
computer, it will search
faster by scanning the
index lists. If you don't search your computer
often, or even if you do
search often, this system
service is completely
unnecessary. To disable do
the following: 1. Go to Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Double-click Add/
Remove Programs
5. Click the Add/Remove Window Components
6. Uncheck the Indexing
services
7. Click Next

Disable UnnecessaryServices in windows

Because Windows XP has to be all
things to all people it has
many services running that
take up system resources
that you will never need.
Below is a list of services that can be disabled on
most machines: Alerter
Clipbook
Computer Browser
Distributed Link Tracking
Client
Fast User Switching Help and Support - (If you
use Windows Help and
Support leave this enabled)
Human Interface Access
Devices
Indexing Service IPSEC Services
Messenger
Net meeting Remote
Desktop Sharing (disabled
for extra security)
Portable Media Serial Number
Remote Desktop Help
Session Manager (disabled
for extra security)
Remote Procedure Call
Locator Remote Registry (disabled
for extra security)
Remote Registry Service
Secondary Logon
Routing & Remote Access (disabled for extra
security)
Server
SSDP Discovery Service -
(Unplug n' Pray will disable
this) Telnet
TCP/IP Net BIOS Helper
Upload Manager
Universal Plug and Play
Device Host
Windows Time Wireless Zero
Configuration (Do not
disable if you use a
wireless network) Workstation
To disable these services: Go to Start and then Run
and type "services.msc"
Doubleclick on the service
you want to change
Change the startup type to
'Disable"

MAKE YOUR MENUS LOAD FASTER

This is one of my favorite tweaks as it
makes a huge difference to
how fast your machine
will 'feel'. What this tweak
does is remove the slight
delay between clicking on a menu and XP displaying
the menu. Go to Start then Run
Type 'Regedit' then click
'Ok'
Find "HKEY_CURRENT_USER
\Control Panel\Desktop\"
Select "MenuShowDelay" Right click and select
"Modify'
Reduce the number to
around "100"
This is the delay time
before a menu is opened. You can set it to "0" but it
can make windows really
hard to use as menus will
open if you just look at
them - well move your
mouse over them anyway. I tend to go for anywhere
between 50-150
depending on my mood.

Enable Administrator in Welcome Screen

When you install Windows XP an
Administrator Account is
created (you are asked to
supply an administrator
password), but the
"Welcome Screen" does not give you the option to
log on as Administrator
unless you boot up in Safe
Mode.
First you must ensure that
the Administrator Account is enabled:
1. Open Control Panel
2. Open Administrative
Tools
3. Open Local Security
Policy 4. Expand Local Policies
5. Click on Security Options
6. Ensure that Accounts:
Administrator account
status is enabled. Then follow the
instructions from the
"Win2000 Logon Screen
Tweak" ie;
1.Open Control Panel
2. Open User Accounts 3. Click Change the way
users log on or log off
4. Un-tick Use the
Welcome Screen
5. Click Apply Options
You will now be able to log on to Windows XP as
Administrator in Normal
Mode. Another Method By default windows XP
doesn't show the Administrator in the user list at the welcome screen.
Here's a way to get around
it. Now head up to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
\Software\Microsoft
\WindowsNT
\CurrentVersion\
Winlogon
\SpecialAccounts\Userlist create a new DWORD entry and name it as Administrator and change its value to 1. exit and reboot for the
changes to take effect.
To change it back change
its value to 0 or simply
delete the key.

Windows Vista Hardware and Software Requirements

According to Microsoft corp, computers
capable of running
Windows Vista are
classified as Vista Capable
and Vista Premium Ready. A Vista Capable or
equivalent PC needs to
have at minimum an 800
MHz processor, 512 MB
RAM and a DirectX 9 class
graphics card. A computer that meets these
requirements will be
capable of running all
editions of Windows Vista
although some of the
special features and high end graphics options may
require additional or more
advanced hardware. A Vista Premium Ready PC
will take advantage of
Vista's "high-end" features
but will need at least a 1.0
GHz processor, 1 GB main
memory, and an Aero- compatible graphics card
with at least 128 MB
graphics memory and
supporting the new
Windows Display Driver
Model. The company also offers Windows Vista
Upgrade Advisor from its
website to determine the
ability of a PC to run Vista
in its various guises. The
utility runs on Windows XP (with Service Pack 2) and
Windows Vista.
Microsoft lists some Vista
capable hardware on their
website. The "Windows
Vista Premium Ready" laptops they specify have
Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 or
above CPUs and 1 GB
memory. Windows Vista's "Basic"
and "Classic" interfaces
will work with virtually
any graphics hardware
that supports Windows XP
or 2000; accordingly, most discussion around Vista's
graphics requirements
centers on those for the
Windows Aero interface.
As of Windows Vista Beta
2, the NVIDIA GeForce FX family and later, the ATI
Radeon 9500 and later,
Intel's GMA 950 integrated
graphics, and a handful of
VIA chipsets and S3
Graphics discrete chips are supported.Though some
XGI Technology Volari
chips were DirectX 9
(including the Volari V3XT
which was available in PCI
cards), with XGI's exit from the graphics card
business it appears none of
its chips are supported as
of Vista Beta 2. A PCI
Express (PCIe) video card is
not a requirement for Windows Aero, but
Microsoft recommends
PCIe video over an AGP
device due to the
interface's greater
bandwidth. There are some PCI cards available
that are compatible with
Windows Vista as well. Windows Vista system

Why is My PC Crashing?

Nothing can put a
damper on productivity
quite like a computer
that crashes on a regular
basis. Sometimes, a
crash is preceded by the dreaded “blue screen of
death” or another
warning; other times, a
computer simply shuts off
without any warning at all. In
either case, the end result is a whole lot of frustration,
aggravation and lost work. If
your computer has been
crashing frequently, you’d
probably like to put an end to
it. Unfortunately, getting to the bottom of things if often
easier said than done. The
following tips about
improving your computer’s
performance, though, are
excellent places to begin. Possibility #1: Corrupted
System Registry Files Every Windows-based PC has
something called a Windows
registry. The registry contains
several files that are integral to
the performance and
operation of your computer. Over time, some of those files
can become corrupted, be
misplaced or get lost
altogether. When that
happens, the system registry
becomes compromised – and frequent crashes are all-too-
common symptoms. The best
way to rule this possibility in
or out is by running a
Windows registry cleaning
program. Such programs scan your Windows registry for
problems then automatically
make repairs. If you run a
registry cleaner and the
crashes persist, they are
probably being caused by a different issue. Possibility #2: Disorganized
Files Windows operating systems
handle file organization in a
way that isn’t very intuitive.
Basically, they break files up
and fit them into gaps in the
computer’s memory. As time goes by, these disorganized
files can prompt frequent
crashes. Luckily, a great
optimization solution is built
right into Windows-based PCs:
the disk defragmentation utility. Although its location on
a computer varies, you can
generally locate it within the
System and Security section
inside the Control Panel. By
running a defrag once every few months, you may be able
to keep those pesky computer
crashes at bay. Possibility #3: Malicious
Software Malicious software can take
many different forms.
Sometimes, it’s a virus that is
accidentally unleashed after
opening a strange email; other
times, its adware that tags along with other information
that is automatically
downloaded from a website.
Whatever type it is, there’s no
question that malicious
software can wreak havoc on a computer’s performance.
Happily, there are many
topnotch programs out there
that regularly scan your
computer for the presence of
such problems – and that help guard against them, too. Buy
one, install it and use it
regularly; your crash issues
may come to an end. Possibility #4: Too Little
Available Memory When you buy a new
computer, it feels like there’s
no end to the amount of
memory that it has. Of course,
this isn’t true at all. As never-
ending as the available memory on your PC may
initially seem, the fact is that it
can be depleted with
incredible speed. You can find
out for sure by checking the
information within “My Computer.” If it appears that
your available memory is low,
you can use a PC cleanup
program to remove
unnecessary files; such
programs remove things like temporary Internet files and
other file debris that can suck
away much-needed memory. Possibility #5: Overheating If you’ve run through all of the
preceding possibilities and
continue experiencing
frequent crashes, a hardware
issue could be to blame. An
easy one to rule out is overheating. A computer’s CPU,
or central processing unit,
includes a fan that is designed
to keep it running cool.
Sometimes, the fan wears
down and doesn’t work as efficiently; other times, it’s
just not able to handle the
work that your computer has
to do. In either case, buying a
bigger, better fan isn’t very
expensive. If it puts an end to your PC crashing problem, it
will have been more than
worth it. Don’t Put Up with Frequent
Crashes! As discussed, frequent
computer crashes can be
triggered by a wide variety of
issues. Luckily, many of these
issues are relatively easy to
remedy. Work your way through the preceding list;
chances are, you’ll be able to
pinpoint the problem and put
an effective cure to work. Nine
times out of ten, a computer
simply needs a little bit of routine maintenance to get it
back on track again. In the
future, keep these points in
mind. Any time you buy a new
computer, keep up with its
basic maintenance right from the get-go. By doing that, you
could avoid “blue screen of
death” and crashing problems
altogether – and that’s
something that you’re bound
to appreciate!

How to Improve Your Computer’s Performance

Few things are as
frustrating as dealing
with a slow, sluggish
computer. When a
computer is brand new,
it works wonderfully well. Over time, though, its
performance can slowly begin
to worsen. This happens for a
number of reasons, but the
biggest culprits are things like
spyware, adware and other computer threats that are
unwittingly downloaded along
with other content while
online. You don’t have to
download thousands of MP3s,
movies or other items to experience these problems,
either – nobody is immune to
them. Instead of accepting the
situation, there are plenty of
techniques and strategies that
you can use to make it better – a few of the best ones are
outlined below. Strategy #1: Clean Your
Computer’s Windows Registry The biggest cause of slow,
sluggish PC performance is
errors and problems within its
Windows registry. Adware,
spyware and other threats
usually target the registry, damaging or misplacing
important files within it. When
it comes to PC cleaning, a daily
Windows registry cleaning
should be at the top of your
list of priorities. However, this should never be done manually
– there are too many
opportunities for major errors
that could seriously damage
your PC’s operating system.
Instead, invest in a high- quality Windows registry
cleanup program and
configure it to run once per
day – you won’t believe the
difference that it makes. Strategy #2: Remove
Unneeded Files Every time you log on to the
Internet or otherwise use your
computer, temporary files are
generated. They are usually
only needed once; however,
they don’t disappear on their own. Instead, they accumulate
over time until they are
cluttering up your computer’s
file system and affecting its
performance. While it’s
possible to remove these files one-by-one, it’s much easier
and quicker to use a PC
cleaning tool that’s designed
for the purpose. Try to do so
about one time per week to
keep your computer humming along with ease. Strategy #3: Remove
Unneeded Programs Like many people, you
probably download and try out
many different programs each
month. How many of them do
you actually end up using on a
regular basis? Chances are, not very many of them. By getting
into the habit of uninstalling
unused and unneeded
programs, you can keep your
computer’s file system a lot
less cluttered. In turn, your PC’s performance will improve
dramatically. You can optimize
your computer in this way by
using its Add/Remove
Programs feature. Its location
varies by operating system, but you should be able to find
it somewhere in the Control
Panel. Strategy #4: Empty the Recycle
Bin When you click “delete” on a
file or a program, it doesn’t go
away for good – not
immediately, anyway. Instead,
it sits in a kind of purgatory in
your computer’s Recycle Bin. As things pile up in the Recycle
Bin, your computer can start
exhibiting some very annoying
problems. If sluggish startups
and frequent crashes are
occurring with increasing frequency – and your
computer’s recycle bin is very
full – go ahead and empty it.
From then on, get into the
habit of doing so about one
time per week. This small but important strategy can make a
huge difference. Strategy #5: Perform a Disk
Defragmentation Windows isn’t very efficient
when it comes to storing files.
It actually splits them up,
depositing them into
whatever spaces are available.
The more spaced apart the pieces of a file are, the harder
your computer has to work to
make them run. The Windows
disk defragmentation system
tune-up utility works to piece
all of those files back together again. The process is a long
one, though, and only needs to
be done about four times per
year. Set it up to run
automatically once every three
months. By doing so, you’ll be able to keep your computer
running in tiptop shape. When it comes to keeping
your computer running
optimally, small but regular
maintenance is the best way
to go. Protecting your PC only
does so much; even the most careful Internet users in the
world unintentionally
download malicious software
from time to time. By using
basic system tune-up tools,
cleaning your computer’s Windows registry regularly,
performing regular file-
cleaning maintenance and
otherwise optimizing your PC,
you should be able to keep it
in like-new condition for a lot longer. Even if your computer
has been performing slowly
for some time, beginning this
regimen is sure to produce
results. In the end, you’ll be
able to enjoy a computer that flies along – instead of one
that spins its wheels.

Tips For Launching Your Own Blog

Blogging has developed
from a specialized hobby
to a full-time occupation.
Many writers live off of
their blogs, and anyone
with something unique to say can gain an audience
and a steady paycheck
with the right techniques. Starting A New Blog Launching a blog requires
some planning. This starts
with the name and address of
the blog. It’s important to pick a good
domain name, as the URL of a
website is one of the most
powerful tools that a blogger
has at his disposal for repeat
traffic. Think of a domain name as a 21st century toll
free number: It has to be
memorable or it won’t be
effective. blog’s domain name should be
descriptive of its subject and
preferably a bit unusual. For
example, a blog about
arrowheads could simply be
titled, “Arrowheads And How To Identify Them,” but
something like “As The
Arrowhead Flies” would be
more memorable. Bloggers should also try to pick
a unique subject or to bring a
unique perspective to the
entries. Writing about
hundreds of subjects will
rarely lead to a successful blog. Content should be focused and
direct. Visitors should know
exactly what type of
information that they can find
on the blog, and using direct
and simple approach improves the chances of regular traffic. Blog Hosting Providers Most bloggers use a hosting
provider like WordPress.com
or Blogger. There are several
major advantages to these
services. They’re inexpensive
and may even be free until a blog develops large amounts
of regular traffic. Also, the
online blogging software
provided by these hosting
services offers instant, easy
organization for a blog of any size. Many bloggers know only
basic HTML and don’t really
want to invest a lot of time
into things like page design.
For these individuals,
integration with a hosting provider can keep costs down
while streamlining the
blogging process. They’re also
ideal for first time bloggers
because they simplify the
process. By using a hosting provider you’ll spend more
time writing and less time
worrying about page design
and web programming
languages. Professional and amateur
bloggers will need to consider
the price and uptime of
various hosting providers
before making a selection. The
service packages of websites like WordPress.com and
Blogger change quite often in
both price and offerings. It’s
usually a good idea to start out
with a package that offers at
least 50% more capability for incoming traffic than you plan
on using each month. This
way, your blog won’t suddenly
crash if you write a successful
post. Blogging services can quickly
become expensive. They’re
worth the money in the long
run, as they’ll allow you to
keep all of the earnings from
ads on your new blog–which is something that free
alternatives with “unlimited
bandwidth” won’t offer you. Speaking of money, you’ll have
to be on the lookout for ways
to make a profit from a blog.
Most blogs use ads from
Google and Amazon
Marketplace. Many bloggers also offer other services and
products directly from their
sites. Promoting Your Blog Blogs need to be promoted in
order to flourish. It’s very rare
for a blog to receive large
amounts of traffic from search
engines like Google alone,
especially when the blog’s just getting started. A good
promotion strategy is
absolutely essential, and a
strong promotion strategy
begins with social media
websites. Promote each blog post from a
new blog on websites like
Twitter and Facebook. Don’t
spam your friends and
followers; only post a single
link to each blog post, and try to reach out to other bloggers
through social websites.
Developing a relationship with
other writers will allow you to
learn about the good habits
that lead to regular traffic. You can even ask another writer to
post a guest entry on your blog
from time to time. This is a
good way to build an audience
of regular readers. Always check the comments
for each entry and respond to
your readers. Cultivate a sense
of community by interacting
with each commenter and
even addressing some of their questions or comments
directly in new blog posts. This
encourages the return traffic
that is important for a new
blog. Finally, blog regularly. Any blog
will fail if it doesn’t have
regular posts. Posting once a
day or more will keep visitors
coming back and will quickly
lead to better opportunities for money and better traffic. Every
blogger should consider
consistency to be extremely
important–keep a consistent
stream of quality entries for
the best possible success.

will fail if it doesn’t have
regular posts. Posting once a
day or more will keep visitors
coming back and will quickly
lead to better opportunities for money and better traffic. Every
blogger should consider
consistency to be extremely
important–keep a consistent
stream of quality entries for
the best possible success.

Using the invisible character

Do you have something that
requires a name but you don’t
want anything in it? You could
just throw nonsense in there,
but a blank space would be
best. In actuality, there is an invisible character! This special
character is the equivalent of a
space: Hold down ALT then type 0160 (Alt+0160) on the number keypad at the right
side of your keyboard. Ways to Use the Invisible
Character 1. You could use it as an email
address when filling out
forms: @ .com 2. Giving your desktop shortcuts
blank labels so all you see is
the icon. (This will only work
on shortcuts, not on My
Computer, My Documents, or
program icons.) You must have your shortcut
labels set to drop shadow so
that the they are clear. Then, follow the normal way
to change the filename: click
the name slowly two times to
highlight the name. Or click
the icon once and hit F2. Type in our invisible character
code (Alt+0160). There you go–
an icon with no label. Keep in mind that if you want
to do this to other shortcuts
you can’t have the same name,
so just type the code more
than once. That means that for
the first shortcut you type Alt +0160 release the Alt key then
type Alt+0160 again. For the
third icon do it three times,
etc. How else do you use this
invisible character? Let us
know by commenting below!

Disabling Windows Vista and 7 Login at Startup

When you start your Windows
Vista or Windows 7 computer,
by default the system makes
you enter your password to
log in. Here’s a way to get
around it. When you first install Vista or
7 and start using it, you are
required to enter in a
password for your account.
But after that, you’re not really
given a choice to remove the password if you don’t want it.
You’re just sort of stuck typing
it in every time and that can
get old rather quickly! If you’re not the only one who
uses your computer, consider
leaving it this way. It is a good
security feature and it helps to
keep all of the different
accounts, files and preferences separate from each other. But
if you’re the only one who
ever uses your computer, you
should be able to get rid of the
password prompt if you want. If you’d like to bypass the
Windows Vista and 7 log on
process and remove your
password, just follow these
steps: 1. Go to Start, Control Panel. 2. Click on the User Accounts and
Family Safety link. 3. Next, click on the User
Accounts link. 4. Under the “Make changes to
your user account” section,
click on the Remove Your
Password link for your
account. 5. On the next screen that comes
up, enter in your current
password. 6. Click on the Remove Password
button to confirm everything. 7. Close out of all the open
windows and restart your
computer. That will allow you
to test the system to make
sure your password really was
removed. From now on, when you start
up your Vista computer, you
will be taken to your desktop
automatically and you will no
longer have to worry about a
password.

Three Options for Finding Clip Art That is Not Junk

I often need buttons, generic
images, or just plain ideas for
graphics for a variety of
reasons: icon for an article, as
part of a larger image or
mockup of a web page, etc. Three Options for Finding Clip
Art That is Not Junk 1. Stock images – Buying your source material, if it is
copyrighted, is the only moral
thing to do. Designers worked
hard to save you the time. And
a stock website like
iStockPhoto makes it very affordable, so there’s no
reason to rip off the creator.
Searching a website stock
image website can lead you to
high-quality images and
reduce the clutter of poorly made graphics. iStockPhoto in particular has an amazing
advanced search function, by
size, shape, color, even area
where you want to put text. 2. Search engines – Google’s image search has gotten better
too. If you search by exact size
you can often find what you
need so that you don’t even
need to resize it yourself.
Again, make sure you pay for copyrighted works. But it can
also be a source of ideas and
can show you many images,
quickly. 3. Open Source – That’s generally where I stop, but I recently
found a great website called Open Clip Art Library. It is well organized, and many of the
graphics are good quality and
usable without needing
editing. It’s worth considering
as one of the first places to
search, and in fact, I’m going to start here from now on,
since stock sites and search
engines can be overwhelming.

How To Remove Page Info From Printed Pages

By default browsers will add
the date, page number and
URL to any page printed from
the Internet. For most (if not
all) of the printables on this
site, you probably don’t want text at the top and bottom of
the page. Luckily it’s pretty
easy to fix, just pick your
browser and follow the
instructions below. Internet Explorer 7 Printing
Tips By default there’s a small
image of a printer, click that
and go to “Page Setup…”.
Below is a screenshot showing
the button you’re looking for. Go to “File”, “Page Setup…”,
then erase the text in the
“Headers and Footers text
boxes.
(The default for header is
&w&bPage &p of &P and for footer &u&b&d if you need to
put it back later. IE’s default
margins are 0.75 inches.) Click the “OK” button and
you’re done. Firefox Printing Tips From the menu in the top left
corner of your browser,
choose “File”, then “Page
setup..”. Go to the second tab
called “Margins & Header /
Footer”, in the drop down lists choose “Blank” for all the
items you don’t want printed.
The screenshot below gives a
better view of what I mean. If you want, you can also
adjust the print margins here
as well, Firefox’s default
margins are set at 0.5 inches.
Once you have your setting
chosen, click “OK”, and you’re done! If you’d like a faster way to
get to the print preview
feature from within Firefox,
the Print / Print Preview
extensions is very handy. It
adds a submenu to your context menu (the menu that
pops up when you right click
on a webpage) with “Print”,
“Print Preview” and “Page
Setup”. Much faster if you
change margins, headers etc. often

Windows Unsolved Mysteries !

Hi today i will share a few cool and mysterious things. I hope
you all like this article .
Here are some of the
unsolved mysterious things
involving the worlds most
used OS "Windows" .One day i got a mail stating that...... This is not the first time I
listen about this funny
question that "why we can't
create a folder with
name 'CON' , and I’m sure most of you also try to make
folder "CON" just now after reading the title of article ! if
no,then go and 1st try it .... If
you try creating a folder
named CON, as the mail claims, it’ll get renamed
automatically to New Folder. But there is no mystery behind
this, and the team at Microsoft
very well knows the reason
for this. :-) Why is it not possible to create a folder named CON ? Before we proceed further, let
me tell you a small secret you
can’t even create a folder
named PRN, AUX, NUL and many others. The reason you can’t create a
folder with these names is
because these are reserved
keywords used by DOS. The below screen-shot taken from
Microsoft’s website shows a
list of reserved keywords in DOS. If you try creating a folder
with any of these names, the
name automatically changes
back to the default “New
Folder”. And this is what has
caused the confusion. Instead of automatically renaming the
folder, had an explanatory
warning message popped up. Here are Some of the Other Mysteries 1.Go to notepad and type Bush hid the facts. After which, save
your work anywhere
with any name and close
notepad. Then re-open
notepad and open your
previously saved file and look what
appears. 2.Open Microsoft Word then type: =rand (200, 99) and
press ENTER. By now
I bet you’re seeing something
strange that not even Bill
Gates and his team can
explain.

Cheatbook Database - Game Cheats And Cheat Codes

Game cheats and cheat codes
have been very important for
previous gaming generations.
They were highly popular
before the Internet became
popular. Game magazines back then filled a lot of pages
with walkthroughs, tips, tricks
and cheat codes. Today with
Internet access almost
everywhere, there is no need
for offline access to game cheats. All it takes is a search
on the Internet to find all the
information you need for
practically any game ever
created. Sometimes though you may
require offline access. Maybe
you have decided to play some
older games on your laptop on
holiday and know that you
won’t have Internet access there. The Cheatbook Database
is a free constantly updated
cheat codes collection for the
Windows operating system.
The developers release a new
version of the software once a year to keep up with recent
game releases. When you first start the
software you see a large
listing of available game titles
in the left sidebar. A search at
the top can be used to find
cheats for specific games. Each cheat is listed with a
date, last update and other
information. The game cheats
are listed on the right in text
format. The program does not
seem to make use of screenshots or other media. Game cheats vary a lot. From
walkthroughs over individual
cheat codes for unlimited
lives, hexcodes or individual
smaller game tips. If you look at the games
listing you will notice that it
largely consists of older
games. The developers are
releasing updates regularly
which come in the form of monthly updates in separate
programs. The Cheatbook
database itself seems to be
updated once a year only with
all the new games. It would
have been better if the program came with an auto-
update option. The program itself supports a
wide variety of gaming
systems. From PC games to all
kinds of consoles, including
the Super Nintendo, Sega
Genesis, Dreamcast, Sony Playstation, Nintendo DS and
this generation’s console
systems. New cheat codes and game
tips can be added manually to
the database as well. That’s
handy for games that are not
listed yet in the program, or
for adding new cheats to a specific game. The biggest issue by far is the
lack of updates throughout the
year. This is somewhat
mitigated by the release of the
smaller monthly updates.
Surprisingly though, only the latest update is available for
download at the developer
website. The game cheats database is
also searchable directly on the
developer site. This database
contains all cheat codes, both
those that are available in the
applications and new ones that have not made their way
yet into the programs. Windows users can download
CheatBook from the developer
website. The 51 Megabyte
download needs to be
installed before it can be used.
The program is compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit editions
of the Microsoft Windows
operating system.

How to Speed up your Internet

The internet browsing speed can be utilized to the maximum extent which one'sinternet service provider is providing by following the below steps, which basically is not used to the fullest level due to reasons like of DNS and so on. Changing of the DNS(Domain Name System) of the current service provider to the fastest DNS servers of the ones like of OpenDNS or Google public DNS will do the required trick. This speeds up the loading time taken for the webpages which r browsed. DNS Servers are used by the internet connection to the correspondence between a domain name and IP address corresponding(each websites has an IP address and can be accessed directly from those IP addresses). It indeed makes the browsing of the internet easier using domain names rather than sequences of numbers. Whenever you call a page, images that are loaded or download files, a DNS server is used. The procedure to attain it with xp and windows 7 and linux and Vista is different and explained below. 1) Procedure for XP : The parameters of the network connection of the Windows XP computer must be changed to declare a new DNS servers. it can be done like this -- Click the Start
button and then
click Control Panel. Click Network
and Internet
Connections. Click on
Network
Connections. Double click the
icon for your
network
connection. Click
the Properties
button. Double click the
item Internet
Protocol (TCP /
IP). Select Use the
DNS server
addresses on
this windows. Then enter the
Preferred DNS
server field the
first DNS server
address to use
for Google 8.8.8.8 Public or
DNS to OpenDNS
208.67.222.222. Then enter the
DNS server field
the second DNS
server address
to use for
Google 8.8.4.4 Public or DNS to
OpenDNS
208.67.220.220. Click OK twice
and then click
Close. Reboot the
system. The
new settings
are then applied.
Launch
your Web browser and visit your
favorite sites.
They should
receive more
smoothly and
quickly. 2) Procedure for Windows 7 : The New DNS servers definition in Windows 7 goes through the Network and Sharing center. It can be configured like this-- Click the Start
button and then
click Control
Panel. Click Network
and Internet. Click Network
and Sharing
Center. In the left pane,
click Change
settings of the
card. Double click the
icon for your
network
connection (this
can be a cable
connection or wireless). Click the
Properties
button. Double click on
the icon Internet
Protocol Version
4 (TCP/IPv4). Select Use the
DNS server
addresses. Then enter the
Preferred DNS
server field the
first DNS server
address to use
for Google 8.8.8.8 Public or
DNS to OpenDNS
208.67.222.222. Then enter the
DNS server field
the second DNS
server address
to use for
Google 8.8.4.4 Public or DNS to
OpenDNS
208.67.220.220. Check the box
Validate
parameters and
left click OK and
Close. The new
settings are
then applied and
your network
connection is
verified. Click Close. Launch your
Web browser
and visit your
favorite sites.
They should
receive more smoothly and
quickly. 3) Procedure for Windows Vista is same as the procedure for Windows 7. 4) Procedure for Ubuntu Linux : Declaration of DNS servers for internet usage is easier in Ubuntu Linux. IT is configured like this -- On Ubuntu, click
on the System
menu. Click
Preferences,
then Network
Connections. Click your
network
connection (this
can be a cable
connection or
wireless) and click Modify. Open the
Settings tab
IPv4. Scroll Method
and select
automatic
addresses only
(DHCP). In the DNS
Servers field,
enter the
addresses of
DNS servers to
use, separated by a space. For
example 8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4 for
Google or Public
DNS to OpenDNS
208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220. Click the Apply
button, type
your password
and confirm
with
authentication. Finally, click
Close. Launch
your Web
browser and
visit your
favorite sites. They should
receive more
smoothly and
quickly. NOTE : Both the OpenDNS and Google public DNS are much faster DNS servers and OpenDNS seems to be a bit faster than that of the Google public DNS.

Increase your Internet Speed

Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes like Windows Updates and interrogating your PC etc. Don't you want to get it back for your self? Here is the trick how to get 100% of your available bandwidth. To get it back: Click Start then Run and type "gpedit.msc" without quotes. This opens the "group policy editor" and go to: "Local Computer Policy" Then "Computer Configuration" Then "Administrative Templates" Then select "Network" then "QOS Packet Scheduler" After that select "Limit Reservable Bandwidth". Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the
truth is under the 'Explain' tab i.e.” By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."
So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.

Google Search Tips

Google Calculator: Just enter the expression in the Google search box and press enter, the
next page will show the result of that expression. Try searching for 1542-182*2/5 and see the result. Wild card search: When you place a wildcard character * in your query, Google will try to replace that * with the keywords that are relevant to the query. For example try searching for “Google * tricks”. Fuzzy Search: Fuzzy search is type of search made by fuzzy matching. Google returns the results for even the relevant keywords for your query. For example when you search for ~music player, the Google search also looks for keywords like mp3 music, radio etc. Number range: If the thing you are searching for has something to do with numbers or number range, then this Google trick is just right for you. If you want to search for a music player having memory between 10 to
30 gb then search for this query “mp3 player 10..30 GB” The results will show you the information about mp3 players having memory between 10 to 30 GB. Page title search: The page title is the single most part of the page. The title depicts the content. You can search only in page titles using allintitle: before the query. Try searching
for “allintitle:tricks”. This query will return all the pages having the tricks keyword n their title.

It will improve speed of windows and you can play some games which require higher RAM.

Linux and Windows : Who Better ?

Microsoft Windows is a family of operating
systems by Microsoft. They can run on several
types of platforms such as servers, embedded
devices and, most typically, on personal
computers. Microsoft first introduced an
operating environment named Windows in November 1985 as an add-on to MS-DOS in
response to the growing trend of graphical user
interfaces (GUI) popularized by the Macintosh.
Microsoft Windows eventually came to dominate
the world's personal computer market. Linux is a free Open Source Operating System,
based on UNIX. It is available from many vendors
with optional paid for support and provides an
increasingly viable alternative to the Win 32
platform. C++ and C# compilers are all available on
the Linux platform. Many a times Windows users talk about what
Windows can do but Linux can’t. To be fair, they
also need to know what Linux can do but
Windows can’t.

Reasons why Linux is better than Windows

· Linux doesn’t have the virus problems : Even Microsoft’s CEO Steve Balmer couldn’t clean
Windows Viruses. Still not convinced? Its not that
there aren’t any viruses for Linux but Linux is
more secure and less virus prone.

· No Spyware: Not just spyware but none of those funny applications that keep doing things
in the background. · Linux doesn’t need defragging: The Linux file systems work very efficiently such that it
arranges data in a way that it doesn’t require
defragging. · Linux doesn’t crash without any apparent reasons. In Linux the core operating system (kernel) is separate from the GUl (X-Window)
from the applications (OpenOffice.org, etc). So
even if the application crashes, the core operating
system is not affected. In Windows (Microsoft
prefers to call this tight integration) if the
Browser crashes, it can take down the entire operating system. · Linux doesn’t crash if you accidentally pulled out your USB key/pen drive. Try this a 100 times if you don’t believe me. But don’t blame me if
your pen drive data gets corrupt. · Linux doesn’t require frequent re-installation: In Windows if the OS crashes, there is no easy
way to recover this. Many IT support staff doesn’t
know what to do and all they can do is re-install
Windows. Which means that users applications
and preferences are lost, and needs to be installed
again. I haven’t seen anyone using Linux, requiring re-installing unless there is a hard drive
failure. Most things in Linux can be fixed without
requiring re-installation. · Linux doesn’t require frequent rebooting: Linux runs extremely stable, even if an application
crashes, there is no need to reboot the whole
system, just restart that application or service.
Linux also doesn’t require rebooting when a new
hardware device is added configured. Linux
doesn’t require rebooting when you change any setting or re-configure your Network or when
you install a new application. · No licensing headaches: Yes Linux is free and you don’t know need to bother about the
complexion licensing of per user/per PC/per
server/etc. Note: Some Linux distributions charge
a yearly subscription to get the updates and
patches, however this is still simpler than the
proprietary world. · 100 File Systems: Linux can read over a 100 different types of file systems. Windows is limited
to its own two file systems. Well most general
users may not care about this but its extremely
useful is you are working in a mixed
environment or you need to extract some data
from a hard drive formatted on another computer. · Source Code: You have access to the source code and the right to modify or fix things if you
are a programmer. Many end users think this is
not necessary but they will realize how important
this is when their application vendor decides to
discontinue support on an older version to
promote a newer one. · No Piracy: You can also share the software with your friends and its completely legal to do so.
Didn’t your teacher tell you in kindergarten that
you should share things with your friends? Linux
and Open Source actually encourage that while if
you do that in Windows its not only considered
illegal but they will call you a pirate! · Linux costs less, because not only the OS is free but the applications are also free. Plus since Linux
doesn’t have a virus problem, you also save on
the recurring cost of Anti-Virus software. Note:
You may still have to pay for support/training but
the overall running cost is low. · Powerful Shell: Both Linux and Windows has shell environment Windows (know as command
prompt). The shell environments in Linux (such as
bash) are more powerful and you can write
entire programs using the scripting language.
This is extremely useful to automate repetitive
tasks such as backup. · Portability: Linux can run from a CD or can be installed on the hard drive. Windows by default
doesn’t have any such option. Using live CDs such
as Ubuntu/Knoppix, users can try out Linux by
booting from the CD, without the need to install
the operating system. Linux is extremely portable,
it can also run off usb pen drives/portable hardrives/thumb drives and more. · US government have Window Backdoors: Did you know that in Windows, there is built in back-
door entry so US government can see you data as
and when they like? Yes the US NSA has the key
build into every copy of Windows. In Linux there
is no such thing possible as the operating system
is open source and can easily be detected and disabled. · Linux has built in virtualization (XEN/KVM/ Virtual Box/etc.) so you can run multiple copies of
Linux or Windows simultaneously. · Complete Driver Packages: The Linux kernel comes shipped with large number of hardware
drivers. 3000 Printers, 1000 Digital Cameras and
200 webcams were supported by Ubuntu. On
Windows, a lot of hardware doesn’t work until
you install the driver, this problem is worse with
Vista as Microsoft doesn’t allow drivers to be installed which are not supported/certified by
Microsoft. On Linux, a huge percentage of today’s
common hardware works perfectly out-of-the-
box. · No registry Keys: Unlike Windows, Linux doesn’t use registry. Most of the configuration is
stored in plain text files, which are easy to
manage/backup and transfer between systems.
Registry is a pain to manage, very complex and
your system configuration is stored in a
proprietary format which needs special tools to open. The biggest pain with registry is when it
gets corrupted, this problem is eliminated in Linux
because it doesn’t use registry. · Linux is the most documented operating systems and most of these documentations are available for free. These documents are well
written and explain computing concepts too. · No more hardware upgrades: Linux runs happily on older hardware and the hardware
requirements don’t increase with every new
version. If you have really old computers like
Pentium I/III, you can still convert them to thin
clients using LTSP and still use them. If you
compare the hardware requirements between Ubuntu and Windows, you would notice that
Ubuntu’s hardware requirements haven’t
changed for many versions. · Completely localized: As there is a strong community and the source code is available,
Linux is localized into almost every language in
the world. You can further customize it for your
needs, you can easily do that. · Excellent package management: Linux has excellent package management tools which make
it easy to install and upgrade applications, Most
Linux distributions makes it very easy to upgrade
from one version to another. · Excellent Development platform: If you are a developer, you will like Linux. Linux has all the
development tools, libraries and compilers built in.
If you are Java developer or a Web developer
using PHP/Perl/Rub or doing C,C++ development,
you will feel at home. · No Hidden APIs: Windows many hidden or undocumented APIs which is used for unfair
advantage to Microsoft. In Linux all APIs are
completely open and documented. For example
Microsoft specifies that everyone writing Internet
application should use the Winsock API while
Microsoft Internet Explorer doesn’t use the Winsock API, it uses an undocumented API
allowing Internet Explorer to run faster than
other browsers. · No Execute by default: By default if you download any file, it doesn’t have the execute
permission, making your system more secure.
The app cannot execute unless you go and
change the permissions. · No write access to applications: By default users cannot install applications unless they
change their permission or login as a supervisor.
This ensures that any virus or malicious code
cannot go and write to your application folder. · No open ports: By default most Linux distributions have all their incoming ports
blocked, thereby making their Operating more
secure from network attacks. · Centralised repository of applications ensures that you are downloading your applications/
patches only from a known source only. The
repository is digitally signed which ensures that
only the right application and code can be
downloaded and installed on your computer. · Faster release cycle: Many Linux distributions have a fixed release cycle of 6 months which
makes it easy for them to incorporate all the latest
applications, bug fixes, improvement and support
for newer hardware. Windows release cycle is
not predictable. Takes a few years and is often
delayed. · Multiple Interfaces: While both Linux and Windows have a GUI, Windows has only one
default GUI. Linux is all about choice and has a
option to use different type of GUIs or Window
Managers as they are know as in Linux. Users can
choose from something that looks like their
favourite Operating System or they can choose something that’s simple and fast. Popular ones are
Gnome and KDE. · Free Applications: Most Linux distributions come bundled with whole lot of applications such as
Office Suite, Photo Editing, etc. You not only get
the OS for free but you also don’t have to pay for
the applications. Yes many of these open source
applications such as OpenOffice.org also run on
Windows but you need to find, download and install them where as there are available in most
Linux distros by default. · Linux saves bandwidth cost: The volume of Updates that Windows, Antivirus and similar
applications do, is much more as compared the
updated in Linux. So if you are paying for every
MB that you download, its a big consideration. · No automatic updates: Windows Vista it setup to automatically update your system by default.
In Linux it will alert you for an update but you
have to choice to click and apply the update. You
can setup to automatic update if you like. So you
can update when you like and not when your
operating system decides to update. · Chat and Social Networking: Empathy/Kopete popular IM clients on Linux are single clients that
can connect to all the protocols – Facbook Chat,
Google Talk, Yahoo, MSN, Jabber, ICQ, AOL and
more. Twitter/Facebook broadcast from the
desktop. With Gwibber client, you can view your
social network status right from your desktop or update your status to all your accounts without
logging onto each of them separately. · Superb Graphics: Linux already has a usable 3D Desktop – Compiz. This makes it easy to switch
and view multiple desktops simultaneously. It
also adds a nice eye candy to Linux. If you still
believe Linux is only for geeks, this feature will
definitely change your mind. This doesn’t require
you to purchase expensive graphic cards, it very comfortably works with on board graphic card. · No annoying message like Vista keeps telling you that xyz application is trying to access your
system. Vista confuses the user, either the user
will always click allow or don’t know what to do. · Easy to dual boot: Linux makes it easy for it to exist with any other operating system. If you
install Linux on a system which already has
Windows, Linux will not mess your Windows.
Windows on the other hand messes up your
Linux partition, if it finds one. · Linux has bundled Databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL which are extremely powerful
and used in production environments. Customer
doesn’t need to purchase expensive databases. · Linux is been used for super computing clusters, most of top super computers in the World use Linux. Windows just can’t scale to that
level. · File system scalability: while NTFS file system can scale up to 16TB, XFS on Linux can scale up to
18 million TB! Yes that bigger than what you
would ever need. · Processor scalability: Linux can scale to unlimited processors. It is already running on a
single system with 2048 CPUs. Windows can’t
even claim to come anywhere near that number. Thank you for reading this article :-)
